Toms Salgals is Associated professor at Riga Technical university (RTU). In December 2023 at RTU established NANO-Photon Lab. and a new research group with the aim to develop a new research direction at RTU: Nanophotonics and the use of nanostructure-based optoelectronic elements in telecommunications (develop new models of nanostructured elements for use in classical telecommunication systems and will ensure the implementation of future quantum communication systems). He is a co-holder of several high-speed data transmission records (OFC, ECOC, SiPhotonics, etc. - PDP) in specific photonic areas.
